Inside INEOS' internal discussions over the next head coach

Wilcox Man UtdManchester United technical director Jason Wilcox has officially reached a firm decision regarding his preferred candidate to replace head coach Michael Carrick, even as two top-tier Premier League alternatives have been completely ruled out of contention.

With mounting pressure on Carrick following a string of concerning domestic and European results, the INEOS leadership group has been actively performing due diligence to ensure a smooth transition should a change in the dugout become unavoidable.

Reports confirm that Wilcox is leaning strongly toward former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe as his primary target for the Old Trafford hotseat.

Howe, who has been out of management since leaving St James' Park, possesses extensive Premier League experience and an aggressive tactical style that aligns closely with Wilcox's structural vision.

Furthermore, because Howe is currently a free agent, acquiring his services would involve no expensive release clauses or complicated club-to-club negotiations, making him an exceptionally attractive solution for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the board.

Simultaneously, two other prominent contenders who fit the executive criteria—Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler—have been removed from active consideration.

Prying Emery away from Villa Park would require a massive compensation package that Manchester United are unwilling to commit, while Hürzeler remains entirely committed to his project at Brighton and has no interest in departing mid-season.

Internal debates continue at Carrington as recruitment director Christopher Vivell previously monitored alternative continental profiles such as Julian Nagelsmann, but Wilcox's preference for proven English top-flight experience is expected to carry the greatest authority within the INEOS structure.

While Michael Carrick remains in charge for the immediate matchday ahead, the establishment of a clear consensus behind Eddie Howe underlines that Old Trafford decision-makers are fully prepared to act if performances do not improve rapidly.

As the club navigates a crucial sequence of fixtures, all eyes remain on the pitch and the boardroom to see when INEOS will pull the trigger on their chosen successor.
