Ruto Inspects Raila Odinga International Stadium Ahead of 2027 Opening Match

President William Ruto has inspected the ongoing construction of Talanta Sports City in Nairobi as the government steps up efforts to have the facility ready for its official opening.

The President toured the stadium on Saturday, November 7, to assess the progress of the project and establish how much work remains before the facility is handed over for use.

The inspection comes as Kenya prepares to host European football giants Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam for the stadium's inaugural match scheduled for January 5, 2027.

The much-anticipated fixture will see German powerhouse Bayern Munich face Dutch giants Ajax in a high-profile encounter expected to attract international attention and give local fans an opportunity to watch two of Europe's biggest clubs in action.

The 60,000-seater stadium has been renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium in honour of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was widely known for his passion for football.

During his tour, Ruto inspected various sections of the facility, including the spectator stands, playing surface and other supporting amenities. The government is keen to ensure the stadium meets the standards required to host major international competitions.

Bayern Munich, who have won the UEFA Champions League six times, will face Ajax, four-time winners of Europe's premier club competition.

The opening match is expected to be a major attraction for football enthusiasts across the country and beyond, while providing an opportunity to showcase Kenya's investment in modern sporting infrastructure.

The stadium is among the key facilities being developed as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Its completion is expected to strengthen Kenya's ability to host international football matches and other major sporting events.

The government hopes the new facility will also create opportunities for sports development, tourism and investment as the country prepares for one of Africa's biggest football tournaments.

The January 2027 opening will mark a significant moment for Kenyan football, with the country preparing to welcome some of the biggest names in European club football.
