Shaw Strikes Again But Man City Let Lead Slip in Dramatic Champions League Finish

Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw celebrates scoring the opener against PSGManchester City’s search for a first victory in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase goes on after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain at the Joie Stadium.

Head coach Andree Jeglertz saw his team drop vital points once again as a late defensive lapse allowed the French giants to steal a point just moments after City appeared to have clinched a hard-fought victory.

The contest looked destined for a nerve-shredding conclusion following a largely cagey encounter where both sides struggled to find clinical sharpness in the final third.

City’s talismanic striker Khadija Shaw, fresh from placing third in the recent Ballon d'Or voting, finally broke the deadlock in the 85th minute from the penalty spot.

The Jamaican forward earned the spot-kick herself after a barnstorming run down the left flank forced a foul from Griedge Mbock Bathy, allowing Shaw to coolly slot home her 10th goal in as many games.

However, the home crowd’s delight was short-lived as City’s defensive concentration wavered almost immediately from the restart.

Just three minutes after taking the lead, the host backline backed off as PSG's Tara Elimbi Gilbert drove unchecked into the penalty box before slotting a composure-filled finish past Ayaka Yamashita to level the scores.

The quickfire response stunned the home side and ensured the points were shared on a frustrating night in Manchester.

The result leaves City sitting in 10th place in the standings with three points from their opening three group matches, trailing four points behind English rivals Chelsea and Arsenal in the coveted top four positions.

Failing to secure a top-four finish would mean Jeglertz’s side must navigate a risky play-off round rather than earning direct qualification for the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the final whistle, Jeglertz expressed mixed emotions, praising his team's overall tactical control while lamenting the defensive lapse that cost them all three points.

With remaining fixtures against Inter Milan, BK Hacken, and Austria Wien on the horizon, City must quickly discover their winning edge to ensure their European ambitions do not slip away.
