Gor Mahia’s first defeat of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season has given their closest challengers an opportunity to narrow the gap at the top after KCB FC secured a 2-1 victory at Embu Stadium on Sunday.
The champions had collected maximum points from their opening four matches, creating early momentum in their bid to maintain their strong start.
But KCB exposed weaknesses in their defence, scoring twice in the first half before surviving a late dismissal to claim the points.
The hosts took control in the 20th minute through Batshi Assis Mambote.
The forward gathered a ball from Paul Kinyanjui and finished from close range, putting KCB ahead against a side that had not dropped a point in the league before the encounter.
Gor Mahia’s defensive problems surfaced again 13 minutes later.
An aerial delivery was not cleared effectively inside their area, and Richard Omondi was on hand to turn the opportunity into KCB’s second goal.
Alpha Onyango gave the visitors hope when he converted a penalty in the 37th minute. The spot-kick followed a foul by Mambote, who brought down an opponent while attempting to deal with a loose ball in the box.
Gor Mahia still had time to pursue a comeback, but KCB prevented them from finding another goal. The Bankers were forced to defend with one player fewer after Baron Ochieng received a second yellow card four minutes from the end of normal time.
Ochieng had been cautioned earlier for a foul on Patrick Essombe. His second booking came after an altercation with Ebenezer Assifuah, leaving referee Yasin Badir with little choice but to send him off.
KCB’s victory took them to within two points of Gor Mahia, making the result important beyond the three points gained.
