Manchester City's Premier League title defence has suffered a significant setback after the club recorded three consecutive league defeats for the first time since 2024. Their latest setback came on Saturday, 7 November 2026, when Nottingham Forest secured a convincing 3-1 victory at the City Ground, leaving Enzo Maresca's side six points behind league leaders Arsenal.
The defeat followed earlier losses against Aston Villa and Brighton, completing a difficult run for a team that had started the campaign with seven successive victories. City's sudden decline has changed the mood around their title challenge, particularly because Arsenal have continued collecting points while their rivals struggle for consistency.
Against Nottingham Forest, City found themselves two goals behind within the opening 18 minutes. Jair Cunha opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Liam Delap doubled the home side's advantage. The visitors improved after the break, with Rayan Cherki reducing the deficit in the 52nd minute, but Delap struck again in the 73rd minute to complete his brace and secure all three points for Forest.
The result was particularly disappointing for City because Forest had struggled to score at home earlier in the campaign. Their victory also lifted them out of the relegation zone, while City were left reflecting on another performance in which defensive mistakes and a lack of intensity proved costly. Maresca acknowledged that his players had failed to match the hosts' energy during the first half.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have strengthened their position at the top of the table. Mikel Arteta's side defeated Hull City 1-0 on Saturday, with Martin Ødegaard scoring the decisive goal in the 72nd minute. That victory took Arsenal to 27 points from 10 matches, giving them a six-point advantage over Manchester City, who have collected 21 points from the same number of games.
The difference between the two sides is becoming increasingly important. Arsenal have won nine of their opening 10 league matches, while City's three consecutive defeats have interrupted the momentum they built during the opening weeks of the season. Although there is still a considerable portion of the campaign remaining, the Gunners have given themselves an advantage that could become difficult for their rivals to overcome if their consistency continues.
However, it would be premature to declare the title race over. Brighton, Chelsea and Liverpool remain among the teams capable of influencing the standings, with their respective fixtures still to be played on Sunday. Brighton entered the weekend in third position with 19 points from nine matches, while Chelsea had 16 points from nine games. Liverpool also have an opportunity to strengthen their position when they visit Crystal Palace.
For Manchester City, the immediate priority will be to stop the losing run and recover the confidence that characterised their opening seven matches. Their quality and experience mean they cannot be dismissed from the title conversation, but another poor result after the international break would increase the pressure considerably.
Arsenal have the advantage for now, but the Premier League season is far from decided. The question is whether City can respond quickly enough to prevent the Gunners from turning their six-point lead into a commanding position.
