Manchester United midfielder Carlos Baleba has suffered a hamstring injury, head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed following the club’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
The Cameroon international was forced off during the encounter at Old Trafford after experiencing discomfort while making an attacking run shortly after the restart.
Baleba had started alongside Kobbie Mainoo for the first time, with the duo offering United impressive energy, composure and creativity in midfield.
However, his evening came to an unfortunate end when he accelerated forward in the early stages of the second half, seemingly preparing to create a scoring opportunity, before suddenly pulling up with an injury.
The midfielder was visibly disappointed as he left the field, particularly with United trailing 2-0 at that stage of the contest.
He received encouragement from supporters around Old Trafford as he made his way off, with Youri Tielemans coming on as his replacement and delivering an impressive performance.
Speaking after the match, Carrick confirmed that Baleba had injured his hamstring but admitted that the full extent of the problem was yet to be established.
“I haven’t got any more news on Carlos at this stage but it’s his hamstring,” Carrick said at his post-match press conference.
“We’ll have to assess what that looks like but, initially, it doesn’t look great.
“I thought Youri stepped into the game and showed what he’s about, his personality and character stepping into the team, he showed what he’s about. “He’s a top human being, I love having him around for everything that he brings.”
United are scheduled to face Aston Villa in their next Premier League assignment on Sunday, November 8, 2026, with Tielemans now strengthening his chances of featuring against his former side following his contribution against Roma.
The club is expected to provide further information about Baleba’s recovery once medical assessments establish the severity of his hamstring injury.
After the famous win, team captain Bruno Fernandes, who had previously found himself at odds with the manager following comments about the team’s tactics after a 4-1 defeat to Como, dismissed suggestions that the players had taken to the pitch specifically to rescue Carrick’s position.
“We don’t need to save anyone’s job,” Fernandes told Amazon Prime post-match.
“We’ve been working so hard to get out of this situation altogether. It’s been tough. There’s been a lot of speculation in the media, a lot of lies around many things that have happened in this club. Between me and the manager, that we had to clear the air. Nothing like that happened.
“The manager took a decision of putting myself on the bench because I wasn’t performing at that level. Everyone felt that it was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right.
“The manager is the one who makes the decisions. I have to accept them, I have to go forward with that. It doesn’t change the belief I have in the manager, in the staff and every player that is in this club. It doesn’t change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me. It should be [a turning point].”
Fernandes had been left out of the starting line-up for United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth after publicly questioning the coaching team’s approach in the defeat to Como.
His latest comments, however, appeared to underline his continued confidence in Carrick despite the difficult period experienced by the club.
