Gor Mahia made it three wins from three matches in the FKF Premier League on Saturday after beating Bandari 1-0 at Nyayo National Stadium, with Alpha Onyango scoring the decisive goal in the 67th minute.
The defending champions moved to nine points after another narrow victory, having opened their campaign with a 4-2 win over Murang'a SEAL on October 13 before edging APS Bomet 1-0 last weekend.
Bandari frustrated Gor in the first half with a cautious defensive approach, keeping the hosts at bay despite several attempts to create openings. Ben Stanley delivered a dangerous cross from the right in the opening 15 minutes, but Bandari cleared the danger as the teams went into half-time goaless.
Gor made two changes at the break, introducing David Okoth and Patrick Assifuah for Stanley and Denis Omedi. Okoth brought greater urgency down the flank, creating opportunities with his crosses as the hosts stepped up their attack.
The pressure eventually paid off when Onyango found the net in the 67th minute to break Bandari's resistance. Onyango has now scored in three consecutive league matches, including the winning goal in last week's victory over APS Bomet.
Gor made further changes to maintain their momentum, with Sylvester Machaka nearly doubling the lead in the 82nd minute after rounding Bandari’s advancing goalkeeper. Assifuah also came close late on, sending a shot narrowly over the bar as Gor held on for the win. Bandari, who had drawn with AFC Leopards and 3K FC in their opening matches, remain without a league victory.
Elsewhere, Mara Sugar were held to a goalless draw by Ulinzi Stars at St Sebastian Park in Murang'a, missing the chance to move closer to the early league leaders. Mara had drawn 2-2 with 3K FC before beating Mombasa United 2-1, but struggled to find a way past Ulinzi's defence.
Kepha Ondati threatened twice in the opening half, first seeing his effort blocked in the 16th minute before sending a long-range attempt just over the bar. Ulinzi goalkeeper Sylvain Ricks then denied Godrick Vincent shortly before half-time.
Ulinzi improved after the break and nearly snatched the winner in the 68th minute, but Drona Langa cleared Maxwell Onyango's effort off the goal line. The draw took Mara to five points from three matches, leaving them second in the standings, while Ulinzi moved to two points.
The Soldiers, who lost 2-0 to Tusker before drawing with Kakamega Homeboyz, are still searching for their first win after three matches.
