Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has shed light on the status of club duo Byrne Omondi and Mike Kibwage, who were placed on precautionary suspensions following the team’s humiliating 5–1 defeat to Egyptian side Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League preliminary round.
Both players have been conspicuously absent from K’Ogalo’s matchday squads for the start of the new FKF Premier League campaign, despite featuring for the Harambee Stars during the September 2026 international break.
Speaking after Gor Mahia’s league encounter against Bandari on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Rachier revealed that goalkeeper Byrne Omondi has had his suspension procedurally lifted, while defender Mike Kibwage’s case remains under investigation.
“We had put the players on precautionary suspensions,” Rachier clarified. “For Byrne Omondi, we are through with his matter, and he is clear to resume training. However, I believe he is yet to return after suffering an injury.”
The veteran city lawyer also addressed Kibwage’s situation, clarifying that the measures taken were investigative rather than disciplinary, responding to performance concerns during the Pyramids match where players allegedly failed to follow tactical instructions.
“Kibwage requested specific details regarding why he was placed on precautionary suspension,” Rachier explained.
“We did not suspend them per se, nor did we discipline them directly, but we were looking into the events that transpired during the Pyramids game. It was alleged that they did not play according to instructions, and he wanted to know how he was being faulted.”
Shedding further light on earlier statements by head coach Charles Akonnor, the chairman detailed the scope and methodology of the ongoing internal review by the reigning FKF Premier League champions.
“We are not defending ourselves,” he added. “We intend to provide them with match footage so they can state, in their own view, whether such occurrences are normal in football. For Kibwage, investigations are still ongoing, while Omondi’s precautionary suspension has been officially lifted. That is the true position regarding the two players.”
On the pitch, Gor Mahia have seamlessly navigated the absence of the two dependable stars, extending their flawless start to the season with three wins from as many matches following their victory over Bandari.
Defenders Potiphar Odhiambo and Kevin “Saha” Omondi, alongside goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi, have held down the fort admirably to keep the champions on track.
