Much has changed since Chelsea's last visit to Sunderland - this is a must-win game

Sunderland host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

By the time Sunday rolls around, it will have been exactly 168 days since Chelsea’s last visit to the Stadium of Light. How swiftly, inexplicably, and profoundly the mood on Wearside has soured in the intervening period.

May 24th is a date seared into the affections of Sunderland fans. In 2025, it brought with it Wembley jubilation and a Premier League promotion that many had long since given up on. This year, it conjured up the most surreally magical of afternoons - a 2-1 win on home soil that ensured a wholly unexpected passage into the Europa League, and cemented head coach Regis Le Bris’ status as a pioneering icon of the club’s modern history.

To be in the ground that day, to wander through town in the hours afterwards and soak in the dreamy, carnivalesque atmosphere, was to be part of something blessed. Sunderland - the perpetual underdog, the butt of many a joke, the pitiable Netflix weepers - were finally having their day in the sun, and in the moment, it was almost too easy to kid yourself into believing that it might never set again.

But football doesn’t work that way. It is a cruel, writhing, unforgiving thing, and the Sunderland of autumn increasingly feel like a husk of the side they were in late spring. Propping up the Premier League table, they have been gossamer-thin at the back and bereft of any meaningful sense of intent or ingenuity in the final third for several weeks now. A blip has turned into a malaise, which in turn, has grown into something akin to a rot.

Up until Thursday night, the Europa League - that grand prize for the Black Cats’ pluckiness last season - had offered a refuge of sorts, but a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb has only served to deepen concerns further still.

And so, Chelsea travel to the North East this weekend for a fixture that has taken on a new, intimidating magnitude, and that - in the eyes of many - will act as a referendum on Le Bris’ future. The head coach may have been afforded a public vote of confidence from the board in recent days, but lose - with an international break looming and matches against the likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool to come before the first Tyne-Wear Derby of the campaign on December 6th - and Sunderland’s predicament will pale to an even more frightening hue. Five points from 10 matches would, to many, be considered indefensible, even for a figure as adored and appreciated as Le Bris.

Much has changed on Wearside since the last time Chelsea paid a visit. Through circumstance and grim necessity, Sunderland’s aspirations have shifted. No longer are they the precocious upstarts of the division looking to rubber-stamp an unthinkable continental upset. Instead, they are a team in turmoil, desperately seeking the inspiration they need to play their way clear of trouble.

But one thing remains the same; just like it was on May 24th, this is a must-win game.
