Barcelona Prepare Long-Term Contract Offer to Secure Future of 19-Year-Old Defender

Barcelona are preparing to offer Ghanaian defender Hafiz Gariba a long-term contract as they look to secure the future of one of their promising La Masia prospects.

According to Barca Universal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Catalan club wants to extend the 19-year-old’s stay until 2031 following his encouraging development since joining the academy in February 2025.

Gariba’s current agreement is reportedly due to expire in 2027, prompting Barcelona to consider a four-year extension that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2031. The proposed deal reflects the club’s desire to protect his future and prevent other teams from taking advantage of his contractual situation.

The Ghanaian centre-back initially joined Barcelona’s youth system through the Marcet Foundation. Since arriving, he has gradually progressed through the academy structure and earned opportunities to work alongside Hansi Flick’s first-team squad.

His development has attracted attention within the club, particularly after he was included in preparations for the senior team’s pre-season programme. Gariba was among the young players involved in early training sessions with the first team, giving him valuable exposure to the demands of senior football.

He also trained under Flick when injuries affected the availability of several defenders. On those occasions, the youngster joined preparations ahead of matches against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, providing him with an opportunity to demonstrate his qualities to the coaching staff.

Although he has yet to establish himself in the senior side, those experiences have strengthened his connection with the first-team environment and offered an indication of how Barcelona view his potential.

Gariba has continued his progress with Barça Atlètic this season under coach Juliano Belletti. He has made nine appearances for the reserve team and become an increasingly important member of the squad. His regular involvement has provided an opportunity to gain experience and continue developing in a competitive environment.

Within Barcelona’s youth setup, the Ghanaian is regarded as one of the defensive prospects worth watching. His progress has encouraged the club to begin planning a contract renewal, although negotiations are expected to involve more than financial considerations.

Reports suggest that several clubs are monitoring Gariba’s situation, with interest in his abilities and the uncertainty surrounding his existing contract increasing the importance of Barcelona securing an agreement. The Catalan side will be keen to avoid losing a defender whose development has attracted attention beyond the academy.

However, the club’s sporting project will also be an important part of discussions. Gariba will need to understand how Barcelona intend to support his development and what opportunities could eventually become available in the senior team.

The coaching staff’s previous decision to involve him in first-team training suggests that they have confidence in his potential. Nevertheless, a long-term agreement will depend on both parties reaching acceptable terms.

Barcelona are therefore expected to discuss the proposed extension with the player and his representatives as they seek to keep him in Catalonia. If an agreement is reached, the contract would provide greater certainty over Gariba’s future while allowing him to continue progressing through the club’s development system.
