Barcelona have reportedly introduced stricter contractual penalties against construction company Limak amid growing concerns over delays to the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou. According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the club is seeking stronger guarantees that important construction milestones will be achieved as it works towards completing the stadium project.
The latest measures, agreed upon by Barcelona and the investors financing the redevelopment, could allow the club to appoint another contractor to handle the installation of the stadium roof if Limak fails to meet specific deadlines. The development reflects increasing concern about the financial consequences of further delays to a project valued at almost €2 billion.
Under the revised contractual arrangements, two significant deadlines have been established. Limak is expected to complete construction of the new Barcelona Botiga, which will replace the club’s existing official store, by January 2027. The second requirement concerns the VIP seating facilities, with at least 75 per cent of those areas expected to be completed by March 31, 2027.
Failure to achieve either target could give Barcelona the option of bringing in a different construction company to oversee the stadium roof installation. Both the new club store and the VIP facilities are important components of the redevelopment because they are expected to generate considerable commercial income and improve the club’s matchday business.
The stricter conditions underline Barcelona’s determination to prevent additional setbacks from affecting the wider redevelopment schedule. With substantial investment involved, the club and its financial partners are keen to ensure that the stadium becomes operational according to the planned timetable and begins generating the expected returns.
Barcelona currently expects work on the roof installation to begin in June 2027, once the football season has ended. The construction process is projected to continue until October or November of that year, meaning the stadium could remain unavailable for part of the following campaign.
As a result, the club may have to return to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys during the opening months of the 2027–28 season. Barcelona have reportedly reserved the Montjuïc venue as a temporary home while work at Camp Nou continues.
The club’s longer-term objective is to return to Spotify Camp Nou by January 2028, with the renovated stadium expected to accommodate approximately 95,000 spectators at that stage. Further development should eventually increase its capacity to around 104,000, making it one of Europe’s largest football venues.
Financial considerations have played a significant role in Barcelona’s decision to strengthen its position against Limak. Playing at Montjuïc previously reduced the club’s projected matchday revenue, demonstrating the commercial importance of returning to Camp Nou as soon as possible.
Any additional construction delays could therefore create further financial pressure and disrupt Barcelona’s plans to increase income from stadium operations. The revised penalties are intended to protect the club against those risks and provide greater control over the remaining work.
Although reports indicate that Barcelona has considered alternative arrangements should Limak fail to satisfy the new requirements, the construction company has reportedly declined to comment on the latest contractual measures. For now, the club’s focus remains on ensuring that the agreed deadlines are respected and that the redevelopment progresses without further disruption.
