According to a report by The Athletic on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Chelsea could be left regretting their decision to sell Djordje Petrovic after the Serbian goalkeeper continued to impress at Bournemouth, with former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel questioning the Blues' decision to let him leave Stamford Bridge.
Petrovic initially joined Chelsea from New England Revolution in 2023 for approximately £14 million. However, after making 31 appearances, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 44 goals, he was sold to Bournemouth in 2025 for a reported £25 million.
The 26-year-old has since established himself as an important player for the Cherries, making 51 appearances for the club and attracting attention with his performances this season.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Friedel praised Petrovic's development and suggested Chelsea might eventually question their decision to sell him.
“They Bournemouth have an excellent goalkeeper. He was one of yours,” Friedel told presenter Andy Jacobs.
“I really like Djordje. He was over in MLS and then went overseas. I think he’s an excellent goalkeeper. I’m wondering if Chelsea feel they should have allowed him to go, but a great gather by Bournemouth,” added the former Liverpool, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Blackburn goalkeeper.
Petrovic has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season, conceding 14 goals and recording four clean sheets.
However, Chelsea's current goalkeeping options have also delivered encouraging performances under manager Xabi Alonso.
Emiliano Martinez has conceded 11 goals in six appearances and kept one clean sheet, while Mike Penders has allowed six goals in six matches and recorded three clean sheets.
Penders currently boasts a 70 per cent save percentage, slightly higher than Petrovic's 60 per cent and Martinez's 69.4 per cent.
Martinez leads the three goalkeepers with 25 saves, while his Premier League goals-prevented figure of +1.65 is also the highest.
The Argentine is currently recovering from a fractured jaw, giving Penders an opportunity to establish himself as Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper.
Although Petrovic's performances have raised questions about Chelsea's decision, the club will hope Martinez and Penders can prove that their current goalkeeping options are capable of delivering consistently throughout the campaign.
