Chelsea Player Makes it Clear he Wants to Play For Another Club

Chelsea midfielder Valentín Barco has revealed his ambition to return to Boca Juniors later in his career, raising fresh questions about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge under manager Xabi Alonso. According to a report by Football London on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Argentine has made it clear that rejoining his boyhood club remains an important personal goal despite his current commitment to Chelsea.

Chelsea’s expensive recruitment model often requires the club to consider player sales, and Barco could eventually become part of that process. Although he arrived with considerable expectations, the midfielder has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter since moving to England.

Competition for places has made his situation particularly challenging. Jordan Henderson, Romeo Lavia, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo are among the players competing for midfield opportunities, leaving Barco with limited chances to secure a consistent role in Alonso’s plans.

The 22-year-old joined Chelsea from Strasbourg in a transfer reportedly worth £34 million. However, he has managed only one Premier League start since completing the move, making it difficult for him to demonstrate his qualities regularly in England’s top flight.

His circumstances contrast with the impressive period he enjoyed at Strasbourg under Liam Rosenior. Barco had opportunities to showcase his ability in France, but the increased competition and demands at Chelsea have restricted his involvement since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking during an interview with the Edul Brothers, the Argentine discussed his ambitions and expressed his desire to eventually return to Boca Juniors, where his professional career began. He made it clear that winning trophies and repaying the supporters for their affection remain central to his plans.

“I want to win titles, be important, repay the fans for all their love. It's something I feel I owe. I'm taking responsibility for my past; I'm going to come back,” Barco said.

He also reflected on the emotional difficulty of leaving Boca, explaining that he had spent much of his childhood developing at the Argentine club. Having joined its academy at the age of nine, his departure represented a significant moment in his career.

“I was at the club since I was nine; those 35 games were a dream. It all happened so fast; it was hard to leave, but I think I made the right decision,” he added.

Barco’s latest comments are consistent with feelings he reportedly expressed during his final months at Strasbourg, when he also spoke about his connection with Boca before completing his move to Chelsea. His ambition to return therefore appears to be a long-standing personal objective rather than a reaction to his current lack of playing time.

Chelsea signed Barco alongside Emmanuel Emegha in a combined deal reportedly worth £60 million. However, neither player has made a major impact on Alonso’s first-team arrangements so far.

Despite Barco’s limited involvement, the Chelsea manager reportedly values his competitive attitude and determination. A busier fixture schedule, particularly if the club secures European qualification for next season, could provide him with more opportunities to establish himself.

For now, Barco remains at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea may still regard him as a valuable long-term asset. If he leaves in the near future, however, another European club is considered a more realistic destination than an immediate return to Boca Juniors.
