Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has explained what Barcelona midfielder Gavi must do to earn a return to the national team after leaving the 21-year-old out of his latest squad. According to Barca Universal on Friday, November 6, 2026, the midfielder has again been overlooked for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, following his omission from the October selection.
Gavi’s absence comes during a period in which opportunities at Barcelona have been limited. Under manager Hansi Flick, the young midfielder has struggled to secure a regular starting place, making it more difficult for him to strengthen his case for international selection.
Speaking at a press conference after revealing his squad, De la Fuente made clear that Gavi remains capable of returning, but must continue working and developing. The Spain coach encouraged him to maintain his character while improving the areas needed to meet the demands of the national team.
“Gavi has to continue to be himself. He knows that he must continue to work and grow to be here again,” De la Fuente said.
The manager also highlighted the depth of quality available to Spain, explaining that competition for places is intense. He stressed that every player must keep progressing because the standards expected at international level are particularly high.
“It’s not easy at all, because we demand a lot and all the players have a great level, but they all have to keep improving to come to the national team,” he added.
The midfielder has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter for Barcelona in recent weeks. Although his playing time has been restricted, he did feature from the bench in the club’s Champions League match during the week. That appearance could provide an opportunity to build momentum as he seeks a more prominent role.
Barcelona are preparing for a significant La Liga fixture against Atlético Madrid on Sunday. The match will be the Catalan club’s final assignment before the international break, giving Gavi another chance to impress Flick and strengthen his prospects of earning more minutes.
Spain, meanwhile, are preparing for Nations League meetings with Czechia and England. De la Fuente’s selection means Gavi will not be involved in either fixture and must use the coming period to continue working towards a recall.
Despite the latest setback, the 21-year-old remains valued for his energy, technical quality and combative approach in midfield. Those attributes have made him an important young talent for both club and country, even as competition for places remains strong.
For now, his immediate challenge is to secure more consistent opportunities at Barcelona. Regular involvement would give him a stronger platform at the highest level. De la Fuente’s message suggests that continued development and improvement are central to any return.
Gavi will therefore be watching Spain’s next fixtures from home while concentrating on his performances for Barcelona. With the national team places fiercely contested, he must turn his limited club opportunities into convincing displays if he hopes to feature in future selections.
