According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia has discussed his adaptation to Hansi Flick's demanding playing style, revealing that he enjoys contributing to the team in ways beyond making saves.
Since joining Barcelona from Espanyol in 2025, the 25-year-old has embraced the additional responsibilities expected of him under Flick.
Playing as Barcelona's goalkeeper involves more than preventing opponents from scoring. Flick expects his goalkeeper to support the defence, help build attacks from the back and remain alert to potential threats behind the defensive line. Garcia said these responsibilities suit him and are aspects of the game he enjoys.
Speaking in an interview with GQ, the goalkeeper discussed the pressure of representing Barcelona, his development and how he has settled into the team. He explained that helping the side in different areas has always been part of his approach to the game.
Garcia expressed confidence in his ability to handle the greater demands at Barcelona, while emphasising his determination to continue improving. He described himself as an all-round goalkeeper who wants to influence matches in several ways, including stopping opposition attacks.
His ability to contribute outside the penalty area has also proved valuable under Flick. Garcia recently kept his first Champions League clean sheet as Barcelona defeated Aston Villa 3-0.
The Spaniard also spoke about the mental challenges associated with playing as a goalkeeper. He explained that players in the position understand their responsibilities from an early age but become better at handling difficult situations through experience.
Garcia admitted that he has occasionally worked with mental health professionals, stressing the importance of mental preparation. Despite being just 25, he also tries to support younger teammates by sharing his experience and offering advice.
The former Espanyol goalkeeper is gradually attracting the attention of Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, although he still faces competition before establishing himself as the national team's first-choice goalkeeper.
His performances since arriving at Barcelona have been encouraging, and his continued development could prove important as the club pursues its ambition of winning the Champions League.
