According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is still working to identify his strongest starting lineup as he continues to establish his preferred system at Stamford Bridge.
The Spanish manager has several important players unavailable through injury, including Joao Pedro, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martinez. However, their eventual return could create difficult selection decisions as Alonso looks to build a competitive team.
In goal, Martinez remains the preferred option ahead of Mike Penders, whose recent performances have been encouraging. Reece James is expected to occupy the right-back position, provided he can overcome his previous injury problems.
At centre-back, Josh Acheampong could partner Levi Colwill. Acheampong's physical strength and defensive ability make him a promising option, while Colwill offers composure and quality in possession. This combination could leave £52 million summer signing Lacroix outside the strongest eleven.
Jorrel Hato is tipped to start at left back ahead of Pep Chavarria because of his technical ability and attacking contributions.
In midfield, Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo could form an effective partnership. Lavia would provide defensive protection and control possession, allowing Caicedo to contribute more freely in different areas.
Further forward, Estevao Willian deserves a starting position on the right wing following his impressive performance against Manchester United. Cole Palmer remains the preferred choice in the number ten role because of his creativity and ability to influence matches.
Morgan Rogers could occupy the left wing, offering versatility and attacking quality, while Joao Pedro is expected to lead the attack when fully fit.
Overall, this proposed lineup would provide Alonso with a balanced combination of defensive strength, midfield control and attacking creativity as he continues shaping Chelsea's long-term project.
