The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has explained why Kim Lars Björkegren was selected to lead the Black Stars on an interim basis for their November 2026 matches.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the decision was based on continuity, experience in domestic football and the technical ability of coaches already working within Ghana’s national team structure.
According to Asante Twum, the selection committee first considered continuity before looking at coaches in the Ghana Premier League. The committee also assessed coaches working with the country’s national teams before settling on Björkegren.
The Swedish coach currently handles the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national team. His appointment has attracted attention because he will temporarily take charge of the men’s team while continuing his existing responsibilities.
Björkegren will work with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram as assistant coaches, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda will serve as the goalkeepers’ coach.
The interim team has been appointed to prepare the Black Stars for their November Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Somalia.
The appointment follows Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia.
The GFA’s coach search committee is continuing its work to find a permanent head coach. The immediate task for the interim team is to help Ghana improve its results and revive its qualifying campaign.
