William Donkoh was attending to a private matter when accident occurred – Elmina Sharks PRO

Elmina Sharks goalkeeper William John Donkoh was travelling on a motorbike to check on work he had commissioned when he was involved in the accident that led to the amputation of his left leg, the club’s Public Relations Officer, Kingsley Smith Arthur, has revealed.

Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Arthur recounted the events leading up to the accident, which occurred on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Cape Coast.

He said Donkoh had featured for the club in their Access Bank Division One League home fixture against Future Stars at the Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom Sports Stadium on Sunday, keeping a clean sheet before taking the team’s scheduled day off on Monday.

According to Arthur, the team returned for recovery training at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with Donkoh leaving for home after the session.

The club received news of the accident later that afternoon, prompting officials to rush to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where the goalkeeper had been taken for treatment.

“Per eyewitness reports, we have been told that there was a head-on collision with the tricycle, just on the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital road,” Arthur said.

He added that the club had been informed that Donkoh was travelling to check on people who had been contracted to carry out some work for him but had yet to complete it.

“So he took up a bike to go and check on those people. He met this unfortunate devastating issue on his way to check up on them, right at the road leading to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital,” he recounted.

Donkoh sustained severe injuries to his left leg in the crash and underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday night, October 21. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save the limb, it was amputated.

Elmina Sharks confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, October 22, and have pledged to continue paying the goalkeeper’s salary for the remaining two years of his contract while supporting him through his recovery.
