According to a report by Metro on Sunday, November 1, 2026, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Lisandro Martinez may struggle to play for Manchester United again under Michael Carrick following his red card in Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea.
The Argentine defender had a difficult afternoon at Stamford Bridge as United suffered another disappointing result, extending their winless run in all competitions to nine matches.
After a goalless first half, Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Morgan Rogers took advantage of poor defending from Martinez to score.
United's problems increased in the 63rd minute when Martinez was sent off for hitting Wesley Fofana with his forearm inside the penalty area. Cole Palmer then converted the resulting spot-kick to put Chelsea 2-0 ahead.
The defender's dismissal drew criticism from Murphy, who questioned his recent performances and warned that his disciplinary issues could have serious consequences for his future at Old Trafford.
Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, the former England international described the 28-year-old as a potential liability, arguing that a player with his experience and quality should not be making such costly mistakes.
Murphy also raised concerns about Martinez's mental state, referring to his recent criticism of Manchester United's hierarchy and an earlier incident involving Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke.
He suggested that the defender's recent behaviour had placed Carrick in a difficult position, particularly as the manager continues to face pressure following United's poor results.
Murphy further suggested that Martinez could find it difficult to reclaim his place in the team after serving his suspension. He also questioned whether Carrick would be prepared to select the Argentine again if he remained in charge.
Meanwhile, Murphy admitted that Carrick must take some responsibility for Manchester United's disappointing performances but insisted that the club's problems go beyond the manager.
He pointed to physical and mental weaknesses within the squad, arguing that several players have struggled to maintain the fitness, intensity and unity needed to compete consistently.
The former midfielder also questioned whether Carrick could restore the team's previous energy and togetherness with the current group of players.
Manchester United will now shift their focus to Tuesday's Champions League encounter against Roma as they look to end their disappointing run of results.
