Manchester United have reportedly decided not to dismiss head coach Michael Carrick before the next international break, despite their poor results and increasing pressure surrounding his position at Old Trafford.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the club's leadership has privately agreed to keep the 45-year-old in charge until the international break later this month. United are expected to review his situation at that point before making a final decision about his future.
The decision comes after Saturday's 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a result that extended the Red Devils' winless run in all competitions to nine matches. Their disappointing form has also left them 17th in the Premier League standings, outside the relegation places only because of a superior goal difference.
Carrick had reportedly faced the possibility of losing his job last week. However, United chose to give him another opportunity against Chelsea because senior figures at the club had not reached a common position on who should replace him.
Despite the team's continued struggles, some supporters have shown sympathy towards the manager. A section of the fanbase believes the players must accept responsibility for their performances rather than placing the entire blame on Carrick.
United's latest defeat also included a difficult moment involving Lisandro Martinez, who received a red card after collecting a second booking. Nevertheless, the club's concerns reportedly extend beyond individual incidents, with questions being raised about the team's overall performances, attitude and consistency.
While Carrick remains in charge for now, United are continuing to assess possible alternatives. Several managers have been linked with the position as the club considers its options should it decide to make a change.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is reportedly the leading choice of United director of football Jason Wilcox. However, Julian Nagelsmann is also believed to have support within the club. Unai Emery and Antonio Conte have additionally emerged as possible candidates.
Carrick's immediate task will be to improve results in the matches before the international break. Manchester United are scheduled to face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday before returning to Premier League action against Aston Villa.
Those two fixtures could have a major influence on the club's assessment of the manager. With United struggling near the bottom of the table and supporters increasingly concerned about their direction, the upcoming matches represent an important opportunity for Carrick to improve the situation.
For now, the club's decision provides him with additional time, but his longer-term position remains uncertain as United prepare to review their managerial plans later this month.
