According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas remains a potential managerial candidate for the club as pressure grows on current head coach Xabi Alonso following a disappointing defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Alonso is preparing for his 11th game in charge of Chelsea, with a challenging trip to Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup scheduled for Wednesday night.
The Blues have won four of their eight Premier League matches under the Spanish manager but have also suffered three defeats, including a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Tottenham on Sunday.
The result sparked concern among supporters, particularly after Chelsea struggled to control the game against their London rivals.
Previous defeats to Arsenal and Brentford had already exposed weaknesses in Alonso’s team, but the performance against Tottenham has brought greater scrutiny to his early tenure at Stamford Bridge.
According to the report, Como manager Fabregas remains a potential option to watch if Chelsea eventually decide to explore alternatives. The Spaniard reportedly attracted interest from his former club before Alonso’s appointment during the summer.
Fabregas has continued to build his reputation in Italy, with Como competing near the top of Serie A. Their impressive 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester United has further raised his profile as a manager.
However, there is no indication that Chelsea are preparing to sack Alonso, with the club reportedly expected to give him sufficient time to implement his ideas.
The report also pointed to injury problems affecting Alonso’s squad. Emi Martinez, Reece James, Joao Pedro, Pep Chavarria, Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha are among the players currently unavailable, limiting the manager’s selection options.
Chelsea face a demanding week, starting with Wednesday’s trip to Liverpool before hosting Manchester United in the Premier League. Cole Palmer will miss the Carabao Cup fixture through suspension after being sent off against Tottenham.
The Liverpool encounter offers Alonso an opportunity to restore confidence, although the subsequent clash with Manchester United will also carry significant importance for Chelsea’s league ambitions.
