Akosua Puni Essien - The First Ghanaian Woman To Own A European Football Club

Michael Essien is widely recognised for his illustrious football career, having played for top European clubs such as Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan. However, fewer people know about the accomplished woman behind the scenes, Akosua Puni Essien, who has established herself as a successful businesswoman and football administrator.

Although many people identify her primarily as Michael Essien’s wife, Akosua Puni has built an identity of her own as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, consultant and sports administrator, making contributions both in Ghana and internationally.

Born and raised in Ghana, Akosua pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, where she graduated from the University of Leeds. Before gaining wider public recognition, she reportedly worked as Michael Essien’s publicist, helping manage his public image and professional brand.

She married the former Ghanaian international in 2013, and the couple have children together. However, Akosua did not limit herself to supporting her husband’s career. She ventured into football business, making a remarkable move that attracted attention across Africa and Europe.

In 2017, she reportedly purchased Italian football club Como FC at an auction for approximately €237,000. The acquisition was widely described as a historic achievement, making her the first Ghanaian woman to own a European football club.

Although the club subsequently experienced financial challenges and changes in ownership before its later progress, her investment remains a notable milestone in Ghanaian involvement in international football administration.

Beyond sports, Akosua has also been associated with philanthropic activities through the Michael Essien Foundation, which supports health initiatives and community development projects aimed at improving people's lives.

Her journey demonstrates that women connected to prominent public figures can also pursue independent ambitions, build successful careers and create lasting legacies of their own.
