A much-maligned Tottenham youngster has been named in StatMuse’s Premier League Team of the Week following a fine performance at Stamford Bridge.

With Spurs having won only once at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era ahead of Saturday’s game, expectations among Tottenham fans were quite low.

However, Roberto De Zerbi’s new-look Spurs side were not burdened by the fixture’s history, as they delivered a statement display.

They controlled the game, starving the home side of possession and emerged deserved 2-0 winners, meaning that they now sit just two points off sixth place.

Mathys Tel recognised for outstanding Tottenham display against Chelsea

Mathys Tel has come in for scathing criticism this season for failing to take his opportunities, and he even found himself left out of Tottenham’s matchday squad against Aston Villa last month.

However, the Frenchman was handed a start against Chelsea, and he grabbed the chance with both hands.

Tel progressed the ball up the pitch at every opportunity at Stamford Bridge, and he sealed the result with an outstanding piece of individual quality in the 87th minute.

The forward picked the ball in Tottenham’s own half, sprinted away from Josh Acheampong, before cutting in past Maxence Lacroix and unleashing a strike into the bottom corner to score what was undoubtedly his best goal in a Spurs shirt.

Tel has been handed a performance rating of 9.2 by StatMuse, making him the second-highest-rated player in the Premier League across Gameweek 8, behind only Nicolas Jackson.

Roberto De Zerbi showers praise on Tel

Speaking after his side’s win at Chelsea on Saturday, De Zerbi named Tel as one of Tottenham’s two difference-makers, alongside Mohammed Kudus.

The Spurs boss said in his post-match press conference: “Mathys Tel played very well. I think we won the game with two wingers, Kudus and Mathys. They made the difference.”

The goal and the praise from De Zerbi will certainly do wonders for the former Bayern Munich man, who has looked short of confidence so far this season.

Spurs fans will be hoping that the 21-year-old’s performance against Chelsea is the start of Tel managing to turn things around and fulfilling his potential at N17.
