According to a report by Evening Standard on Monday, November 2, 2026, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised Arsenal's defensive display as "absolutely outstanding" following their 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The Gunners secured a historic win through Kai Havertz's first-half goal, recording their first Premier League victory at Anfield in 14 years.
Havertz scored in the 16th minute after meeting a superb cross from Declan Rice at the back post.
Mikel Arteta's side then delivered a disciplined defensive performance to protect their lead despite facing sustained pressure from the hosts.
The victory also moved Arsenal three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Carragher praised Arsenal's defensive organisation, describing them as arguably the best defensive team in England and Europe.
He admitted that Liverpool performed well but struggled to create clear-cut chances against Arteta's well-organised side.
"No, it was a brilliant game and both teams can take a lot from it. Liverpool played really well," Carragher said.
"They didn't do enough but you are playing against, defensively, the best team in this country, arguably in Europe and that is without the best centre-back in the world in Saliba."
The former Liverpool defender also compared Arsenal's current defensive unit with the famous back four that helped the club win major trophies in 1989 and 1991.
He believes the present group of defenders is approaching the level of the legendary Arsenal defence led by Tony Adams.
"When you think about Arsenal winning titles, especially in '89 and '91 with Tony Adams and that famous back four, I think we're getting close to putting this back four up against that and in that conversation," he added.
Carragher was particularly impressed by Arsenal's ability to withstand Liverpool's attacking pressure without allowing the hosts to register a single shot on target.
Liverpool managed 17 attempts during the match but failed to seriously trouble Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Alexis Mac Allister missed a good opportunity shortly before half-time when he headed over from close range, while Alexander Isak also had a penalty appeal after Jurrien Timber pulled his shirt inside the box.
However, Arsenal maintained their defensive organisation and determination until the final whistle.
Carragher considered the performance exceptional, particularly given the quality of Liverpool's attacking players and the money invested in their forward line.
Arsenal will now aim to maintain their strong form as they continue their Premier League title pursuit, with their defensive strength proving to be one of their biggest assets this season.
