Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has admitted that he underestimated Morgan Rogers’ ability after watching the forward deliver another impressive performance in the Blues’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
Rogers opened the scoring with an outstanding individual effort, using his strength and technical ability to get past the opposition defence before calmly lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. His performance provided another demonstration of the quality he has brought to Chelsea since completing his British-record £117 million transfer.
The England international has made an immediate impact in West London, recording 10 goals and assists across his first 12 appearances. That achievement places him among a select group of Chelsea players to reach the milestone within their opening 12 matches.
Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard also achieved the feat, registering nine, 10 and 11 goal contributions respectively during their early appearances for the club.
Speaking on TNT Sports after Saturday’s victory, Cole acknowledged that his initial assessment of Rogers had not reflected the forward’s true capabilities. He admitted that he had not fully appreciated the player’s quality before seeing his performances at Stamford Bridge.
Cole praised Rogers’ display against Manchester United, particularly his ability to withstand physical challenges, move beyond defenders and produce a composed finish. He described the Chelsea attacker as a top-level footballer and expressed admiration for the qualities he had demonstrated during the match.
Rogers’ influence has extended beyond his scoring statistics. He has increasingly become an important contributor to Chelsea’s attacking play under manager Xabi Alonso, taking responsibility for creating opportunities and helping the team maintain pressure on opposing defences.
His growing importance has been particularly noticeable during a period when Chelsea have had to contend with several injury problems. Players including Emi Martinez, Reece James, Maxence Lacroix and Joao Pedro have reportedly been unavailable, placing additional responsibility on those fit enough to feature.
Despite the challenges, Rogers has continued to provide valuable attacking contributions, strengthening his position within Alonso’s plans. His combination of physical strength, technical quality and composure has given Chelsea another option in the final third.
Cole also has considerable experience of representing the London club, having made 282 appearances and contributed to 86 goals during his playing career. He won three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a League Cup while at Stamford Bridge.
Rogers is now establishing his own place in Chelsea’s history through his performances since arriving. His productive opening 12 appearances have already attracted attention, while Cole’s admission highlights the impression the forward has made on former players and observers of the game.
