According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is considering six possible alternatives to replace Dani Olmo after the midfielder suffered an adductor injury that is expected to keep him out for around four weeks.

Olmo sustained the injury during Barcelona’s 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint Germain, leaving Flick with a difficult selection decision ahead of a busy schedule, particularly Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The Spain international’s absence is a significant setback for Barcelona because of his creativity, technical ability and influence in attacking areas. However, Flick has several options available to fill the gap.

Fermin Lopez is considered one of the leading candidates to replace Olmo in the attacking midfield position. The young Spaniard has already played in the role under Flick and could receive an opportunity to start against Real Madrid.

His pressing, energy and forward runs make him suitable for Barcelona’s playing style, although he offers a different approach from Olmo when controlling possession under pressure.

Gavi is another option because of his versatility, work rate and ability to contribute in advanced midfield positions. However, he has recently been used more frequently in deeper areas.

Frenkie de Jong could also provide an alternative further forward, although he is more comfortable controlling the game from deeper midfield positions. Flick could instead deploy him alongside another holding midfielder and allow Pedri to operate in a more advanced role.

Brian Farinas and Xavi Espart have also been mentioned among the possible alternatives, although they are considered less likely to replace Olmo directly.

Flick could additionally consider Barcelona Atletic prospects Ebrima Tunkara and Orian Goren. Tunkara offers energy and physical strength, while Goren is known for his technical ability and contribution to attacking build up play.

Despite these options, Fermin appears well placed to benefit from Olmo’s absence because of his experience in the role and familiarity with Flick’s tactical system.

Barcelona must now find the right midfield balance ahead of their crucial meeting with Real Madrid. Flick’s decision could prove important as the Catalan club seeks to recover from its European defeat and maintain its challenge for the La Liga title.
