Barcelona Youngster Set to Start Against Real Madrid After Impressive PSG Display

According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Xavi Espart is expected to start at right-back for Barcelona against Real Madrid on Sunday after impressing manager Hansi Flick during their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 19-year-old has reportedly improved his chances of featuring in El Clasico, with Jules Kounde unlikely to recover sufficiently to start the encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.

Espart produced an impressive display against PSG despite facing a difficult challenge. The Barcelona academy graduate helped contain Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and also scored during the match. His performance has reportedly convinced Flick to trust him with another major assignment.

The youngster has enjoyed an encouraging season under the German manager, who previously admired his performances at left-back, where he has competed with established options such as Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde. However, his recent display on the opposite flank has further strengthened his position in the squad.

Espart demonstrated defensive discipline and attacking quality against PSG, potentially earning another opportunity to prove himself against Real Madrid. Although the Spanish giants present a different challenge, his performance in Paris could help him secure a starting role. With Vinicius Junior suspended, Yan Diomande could pose a significant threat in the upcoming encounter.

The teenager also played through physical discomfort during the match in Paris. He had reportedly worked with a physiotherapist to address quadriceps tightness before the game and subsequently suffered a heavy knock to his ankle during the contest. However, neither issue is currently expected to prevent him from featuring on Sunday.

Kounde's ankle sprain has further increased Espart's chances of starting. The French defender is unlikely to be fit for the encounter and could begin on the bench even if he is included in the matchday squad.

Barcelona are therefore expected to maintain the defensive arrangement used against PSG, with Espart at right-back, Cancelo on the left and Pau Cubarsi partnering Gerard Martin in central defence.

Beyond El Clasico, Espart's continued development could also influence Flick's defensive selections. Consistent performances could make it increasingly difficult for the teenager to lose his place when Barcelona's experienced defenders return to full fitness.
