Chelsea were without Jordan Henderson for their Premier League meeting with Manchester United after the experienced midfielder was ruled out through illness. His absence forced manager Xabi Alonso to make an adjustment to his midfield selection ahead of the important encounter.
According to a report by Football London on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Henderson became unavailable after falling ill before the fixture. BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella confirmed that the 36-year-old was missing because of his health, explaining why he was not included in Chelsea’s matchday squad.
The setback came at an inconvenient time for Alonso, particularly because Henderson had become an increasingly important member of the team since returning from a broken arm in September. The former England captain had gradually established himself as a regular starter, bringing valuable experience and leadership to Chelsea’s midfield.
His recent involvement had demonstrated how much confidence the manager had placed in him. Before the Manchester United match, Henderson had completed the full 90 minutes in five consecutive fixtures, highlighting his growing influence and reliability. His tactical understanding and ability to organise play had also provided Chelsea with additional stability in the centre of the pitch.
Henderson had made an impressive comeback from his injury, producing a memorable display during Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth. On his home debut, he scored twice and supplied an assist, showing that his contribution could extend beyond his defensive and midfield responsibilities.
With the midfielder unavailable against Manchester United, Alonso turned to Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia as his central pairing. The two players were given the responsibility of controlling the midfield and providing the balance Chelsea needed without Henderson.
Lavia entered the contest with renewed confidence after completing his first full 90 minutes for Chelsea during the Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool earlier that week. His improved match fitness offered Alonso another option as he worked to manage the unexpected selection change.
The manager also had Valentin Barco and 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli available as additional midfield alternatives from the substitutes’ bench.
Henderson’s immediate priority is to recover from his illness and return to training when fit. Chelsea are due to visit Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, November 8, giving the midfielder a potential opportunity to return to action if his condition improves sufficiently.
The match could carry additional personal significance because of Henderson’s previous connection with Sunderland. His availability would also strengthen Alonso’s choices as Chelsea seek to build on their victory over Manchester United and maintain consistency in the Premier League.
