According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been urged to make a major change to his starting lineup for Sunday's Premier League meeting with Aston Villa, with teenage winger Shea Lacey being tipped to replace Amad Diallo.
Carrick received some relief after United secured a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday. However, pressure remains on the manager, and another positive result against Aston Villa would help strengthen his position at Old Trafford.
Metro has suggested that Carrick should reward Lacey's impressive performance against Roma by giving him a starting opportunity. The teenager came off the bench in the second half and immediately brought energy, creativity and confidence to United's attack.
Although Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot and Matheus Cunha netted twice to complete the comeback, Lacey also played an important role in changing the momentum of the match.
The 19 year old completed all his attempted passes, won all but one of his duels and delivered an excellent ball that helped create Cunha's winning goal. His display earned praise from Carrick, who highlighted the youngster's ability to cause problems for defenders with what he described as 'that bit of mischief'.
Lacey's performance has increased calls for him to start against Aston Villa, particularly as United have struggled to maintain consistency in attack.
Amad, meanwhile, has faced questions over his lack of goals and assists. The Ivory Coast international has not scored since December 15, 2025, when he found the net in United's 4-4 draw with Bournemouth. Since then, he has recorded only two assists.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney also questioned the winger's attacking output while praising Lacey's contribution against Roma.
Speaking on Amazon Prime, Rooney said: "Amad does some really good things, but it's that end product, that is what takes you to the next level."
Carrick could now consider using Lacey on the right wing, his natural attacking position, rather than continuing with Amad. The youngster finished the Roma match at right-back after Cunha was sent off, but the recommendation is for him to operate further forward.
The Aston Villa fixture presents another important test for Carrick. Starting Lacey could inject fresh creativity into United's attack, although the teenager must prove he can deliver consistently at the highest level.
