Atletico Madrid star admits he grew up watching Barcelona and idolized two club legends

Atletico Madrid defender Cristian Romero has disclosed that Barcelona played a major role in shaping his childhood football ambitions, largely because of Lionel Messi and the influence of former centre-backs Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol. According to a report published by Barca Universal on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Argentina international discussed his admiration for the Catalan club’s former stars during an interview with Gaston Edul on Los Edul.

Romero explained that watching Messi in his younger years encouraged him to follow Barcelona closely. He also revealed that Pique and Puyol were the defenders he looked up to as he developed his understanding of the game.

“I grew up watching Barca because of Messi. When I was younger, I wanted to be like Pique and Puyol,” Romero said.

The two former Barcelona defenders established themselves as one of the club’s most memorable defensive partnerships, playing important roles during a period filled with domestic and European success. Their contrasting qualities complemented each other and helped establish a defensive foundation for the team’s possession-based style.

Pique was widely recognised for his calmness under pressure, tactical awareness and ability to distribute the ball effectively from defence. His composure in possession made him an important part of Barcelona’s build-up play, allowing the team to maintain control and launch attacks from the back.

Puyol, meanwhile, became renowned for his fierce competitiveness, leadership and determination. His willingness to commit fully to defensive challenges and organise those around him made him a respected figure among teammates and supporters. His approach to defending also established him as a symbol of commitment during Barcelona’s successful era.

Romero’s own playing style reflects aspects of both defenders. The 28-year-old has built a reputation as an aggressive and committed centre-back, qualities that have prompted comparisons with Puyol. At the same time, his comfort on the ball allows him to contribute to possession and play out from the back, characteristics associated with the style he admired in Pique.

The Argentine defender has developed into an important figure for his national team and is regarded as one of the country’s leading defensive players. His comments offer an insight into the footballing influences behind his development and the qualities he sought to incorporate into his own game.

Romero joined Atletico Madrid during the summer and now works under head coach Diego Simeone. The Argentine manager is known for demanding intensity, organisation and discipline from his players, particularly when defending. Romero’s aggressive approach and commitment could suit those expectations as he settles into his new surroundings.

During the same interview, Romero also expressed admiration for Barcelona midfielder Pedri, describing him as the best assist provider in world football. His praise for the Spanish international further highlighted his appreciation for Barcelona’s technical quality, despite now representing one of the club’s domestic rivals.

Barcelona were reportedly given an opportunity to sign Romero during the summer transfer window but chose not to pursue the move. Instead, the defender joined Atletico, where he will look to establish himself under Simeone.

Although Romero’s professional career has taken him to Atletico Madrid, his admiration for Pique and Puyol illustrates the lasting influence Barcelona’s former defensive leaders have had on younger generations of footballers. Their contrasting strengths continue to provide examples of how technical ability, leadership and determination can combine to shape an accomplished defender.
