Burkina Faso's U15 national team have been eliminated from the FIFA U15 World Cup after a 3-0 defeat to the Dominican Republic in the knockout stage.
The young Stallions, who had impressed in the group phase with their technical play, were unable to find a way past a physically dominant Dominican side that capitalized on set-pieces and aerial duels.
However, the result has sparked heated debate among football lovers across Africa and beyond, with many describing the tie as unacceptable in world youth football.
Fans who watched the game pointed to what they claim was a glaring difference in height, stature and physical development between the two sets of players, questioning the age verification process at the tournament.
On social media, photos comparing players from both sides have gone viral, with many arguing that the Dominican Republic team looked significantly older and more physically developed than their Burkinabe counterparts.
“This is unacceptable in world football. How can you have U15s looking like grown men playing against kids? FIFA must check this,” one fan wrote.
“Look at the height and stature difference, it is purely unfair. Burkina Faso’s boys are real U15s. The others are not,” another added.
Amidst the controversy and elimination of Burkina Faso has reignited long-standing concerns about age cheating and physical disparity in youth competitions.
Despite the painful exit, the Burkina Faso youngsters have won admiration for their spirited display and are expected to be welcomed home as heroes.
