According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 23, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence in goalkeeper Mike Penders ahead of the Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur, with the youngster in contention for a starting place following Emiliano Martínez’s injury.
Penders has impressed Alonso through his performances in training and his appearances in cup competitions. The Chelsea manager believes the young goalkeeper has the ability and confidence needed to perform at the highest level.
Speaking about Penders, Alonso said: “He's ready. He's training well. He showed he has a good level in the cup games. In the few minutes against Everton, he showed his quality and personality. We are fully convinced Mike can play very well.”
The manager’s comments suggest that he trusts Penders to handle the pressure of a Premier League fixture. With Martínez recovering from injury, the young goalkeeper could make his first Premier League start against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso also explained Chelsea’s decision to bring Martínez into the squad, stressing the importance of having strong options while continuing to support Penders’ development.
“We wanted to have the best possible options and we decided to move with Emi. Mike is a keeper for now and the future. Working with Emi, he's having a great impact on the team and Mike,” Alonso added.
The Chelsea manager’s remarks highlight the club’s belief in Penders as both a present option and a potential long term solution in goal. Training alongside an experienced goalkeeper such as Martínez could also help the youngster improve his game.
However, Martínez’s injury has created an opportunity for Penders to move closer to a regular role in the first team. The upcoming London derby could provide an important test of his ability to perform consistently against Premier League opposition.
His previous appearances in cup competitions have given Alonso reasons to trust him, but facing Tottenham would represent a significant step in his development.
Chelsea will be looking to maintain their recent momentum as they prepare for the encounter. Selecting the right goalkeeper will be important as Alonso seeks to ensure defensive stability against their London rivals.
Although Alonso has not officially confirmed his starting lineup, his positive assessment of Penders, combined with Martínez’s injury, suggests that the 21 year old could be given the opportunity.
Penders will hope to make the most of his chance if selected and demonstrate that he can be trusted with greater responsibility at Stamford Bridge.
