Danny Welbeck Explains His Important Role in Chelsea’s Dressing Room

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Danny Welbeck’s move from Brighton to Chelsea during the summer transfer window came as a surprise to many Premier League supporters, particularly after the striker scored 13 league goals last season and established himself as a popular figure at Brighton.

Few expected the 35-year-old to leave the south coast, especially to join one of England’s biggest clubs. However, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly saw Welbeck as an experienced backup striker who could also help guide the club’s younger players.

Welbeck, alongside Jordan Henderson and Emiliano Martinez, has contributed to raising Chelsea’s average squad age. Their experience is considered valuable as the Blues work to develop young talents and achieve greater consistency.

The former England international has now spoken about his responsibilities behind the scenes, explaining how he supports teammates who approach him for advice. Rather than being an outspoken leader, Welbeck prefers to lead by example and make himself available to others.

Welbeck acknowledged that his age and experience naturally place him in a leadership position, particularly within Chelsea’s relatively young dressing room. He believes sharing lessons from his career can help his teammates improve and develop.

“I’ve been through a lot of experiences, the good and the bad,” Welbeck explained while discussing his responsibilities at Chelsea.

He added that younger players regularly approach him with questions, giving him opportunities to offer guidance. Rather than forcing himself into a leadership role, the striker believes supporting others should come naturally.

“I’m embracing the role,” Welbeck said. “It’s just natural. I just like to help people.”

Although Chelsea signed him primarily for his experience, Welbeck’s contributions on the pitch remain important. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward continues to provide a reliable attacking option for Alonso.

He is yet to score in five Premier League appearances as a substitute for Chelsea. However, his performances in the EFL Cup have demonstrated his goalscoring ability and potential value to the squad.

Welbeck has scored three goals in just 163 minutes of EFL Cup action, including a second-half brace against Leeds United in the third round. His performances underline his importance beyond mentoring younger teammates.

As Chelsea balance the development of promising youngsters with the demands of competing for trophies, Welbeck’s experience could become increasingly valuable. His leadership qualities and finishing ability give Alonso additional options as the season progresses.
