According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly hesitant to appoint Antonio Conte as their next manager because they believe the Italian may not fit the club’s preferred organisational structure.
Conte, who left Napoli at the end of last season, is reportedly interested in taking charge at Old Trafford if United decide to dismiss Michael Carrick following the club’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Carrick is facing mounting pressure after United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result leaves the Red Devils with just two wins from their first 11 matches across all competitions this season.
The situation has become more complicated following captain Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism of the team’s direction, with Carrick also responding firmly to the midfielder’s remarks.
Despite the growing pressure, senior figures at Old Trafford reportedly continue to support the manager. However, Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth could prove crucial in determining his future.
Although Conte is said to be interested in the position, United’s hierarchy reportedly have reservations about his suitability for the role.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager is known for his demanding methods and strong personality, characteristics that could conflict with the organisational structure the club wants to maintain.
Julian Nagelsmann has also emerged as a potential candidate for the position. The German coach is reportedly available after leaving his role as national team manager following another disappointing major tournament campaign.
The report also identifies Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe as possible options should United begin searching for a permanent replacement.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is another name attracting attention following his impressive work at the Premier League club.
Meanwhile, betting odds place Howe among the leading contenders for the position at 9/4, while Conte and Hurzeler are both listed at 5/1. Nagelsmann follows at 7/1.
Carrick, however, remains focused on improving United’s performances and will hope a victory against Bournemouth can ease the pressure surrounding his position.
Reflecting on the defeat to Como, the United manager said: "I’m bitterly disappointed. I’m frustrated, more than frustrated. I’m really angry, to be honest."
He added: "But you’ve got to move on, you’ve got to deal with what’s next and see what that looks like."
