Kylian Mbappe celebrated his 100th goal for Real Madrid as a glorious double at the Camp Nou saw the France striker stun La Liga leaders Barcelona in a 2-1 Clasico win at the Camp Nou.
Mbappe could not believe his luck when the ball flew off him from Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance for the opener on 41 minutes after a fine run and cross by Yan Diomande.
Raphinha dragged Hansi Flick’s side level on 61 minutes when he fired the ball through the legs of Jude Bellingham and beyond goalkeeper Andriy Lunin after being played in by Pedri.
But Jose Mourinho’s men always contained a serious attacking menace and claimed all three points on 87 minutes when Mbappe netted his century for the club by tapping home from close range after Bellingham set up substitute Eduardo Camavinga to produce a fabulous run and cross.
The result sees Los Blancos close the gap at the top to three points, and ended Barca’s hope of beating Real’s 56-year all-time record of 10 straight wins at the start of a Liga season set back in 1968/69.
Both sides had chances in an open and entertaining contest, with Lamine Yamal somehow knocking wide with the goal gaping before the break and Lunin making an exceptional stop to repel a Martin header in the second half.
But Madrid produced a stout defensive effort and smart counter attacking ploy to win the day as an animated Mourinho celebrated with his players at the final whistle before a stunned home crowd.
Champions Barca end the night on 27 points, two points clear of Atletico Madrid with Real a point further back after 10 matches.
