2027 AFCONQ: Interim technical team to name Black Stars squad for Somalia games this week

Black Stars’ interim technical team is expected to announce its squad later this week for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia.

Ghana will face Somalia in a double-header on 12 and 16 November as they seek to revive their qualifying campaign after a disappointing start.

The four-time African champions have lost their opening two Group C matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Ivory Coast in Bouaké before a shock 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The results led to the resignation of head coach Carlos Queiroz, prompting the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to begin the search for a new substantive coach.

A five-member committee, chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe, was subsequently established to oversee the recruitment process.

However, with the Somalia fixtures approaching, an interim technical team has been appointed to take charge of the Black Stars.

Kim Lars Björkegren will lead the team, assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been named goalkeepers’ trainer.

The technical team is expected to finalise its squad this week as preparations intensify for the crucial encounters, with both matches scheduled to take place in Ghana.

Ghana will host Somalia on Thursday, 12 November, before the return fixture on 16 November.

The Black Stars are bottom of Group C without a point from their opening two matches and face mounting pressure to get their qualification campaign back on track.

The four-time African champions are also desperate to return to the continental showpiece after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
