Road to Rome '77 | Liverpool's class and composure show in Trabzonspor turnaround

Ten minutes was all it took for Bob Paisley's Reds to dash the hopes of an excited Trabzonspor at Anfield.

The Turkish visitors' one-goal lead from a fortnight earlier was overturned with relative ease.

Whereas (officially) no Liverpool supporters had been inside Trabzon Sehir Stadt for the first leg, around 3,000 Turks made their way over to Merseyside.

They, according to reporter Horace Yates, "threatened to make this one of Anfield's noisiest nights". But they were virtually silent from the 11th minute onwards.

A quickfire double from Steve Heighway and David Johnson put Liverpool in possession of a quarter-final berth they were never going to let slip.

For good measure, Kevin Keegan made it 3-0 just before the 20-minute mark had even been hit.

By all accounts, the Reds were far from their ruthless best and might have produced a cricket score had they been.

The second half was a procession until tempers among the Trabzonspor ranks spilled over.

Mehmet Cemil Altin had been brought on at half-time and was soon booked for booting the ball into the crowd in response to a refereeing decision he took issue with.

Plenty of wild tackles were being thrown in and, three minutes before the end, Altin received his marching orders for recklessly crashing into Phil Neal.

The conduct of the Black Sea Storm, their translated nickname, prompted the visiting manager to make a formal apology.

Ahmet Suat Ozyazici said: "It should not have happened. I am very sorry about it. Liverpool are very strong and were too much for us in the first 20 minutes."

Keegan, meanwhile, told reporters afterwards: "We were in more danger of losing our legs than our heads. I think our experience helped.

"There was no point in trying to kick back. They can kick much better than we can."

Limbs intact, Liverpool would move on to face Saint-Etienne in the last eight.
