Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Venezuela 1-0 in their quarter-final match on Sunday.
Aishat Oduntan scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, securing Nigeria’s place in the last four.
The match remained goalless at half-time, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to convert them. However, Oduntan kept her composure late in the game to convert the penalty and give Nigeria the lead.
Venezuela pushed for an equaliser in the closing minutes, but the Flamingos defended their advantage until the final whistle.
Nigeria dominated the attacking statistics, recording 19 shots against Venezuela’s six, although both teams shared 50 per cent of possession.
The victory extends the Flamingos’ campaign and keeps their hopes of winning the tournament alive as they prepare for a semi-final clash.
The Nigerian side had earlier secured their quarter-final place with victories in the group and knockout stages, continuing their pursuit of a second FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
