Paulo Fonseca has emerged as the primary candidate to replace Rui Borges as manager of Sporting CP, should the club’s leadership decide to terminate the current coach’s contract. According to a report by A Bola, Sporting officials have already initiated exploratory contacts to gauge the Lyon manager’s availability, with both the 53-year-old coach and his associates signaling an openness to the potential move.
Despite the speculation, the Sporting board, led by president Frederico Varandas, intends to keep Rui Borges in charge for the next two matches. The team faces Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League this Tuesday, followed by a league fixture against Moreirense on Saturday. Record confirmed that while Sporting has contacted representatives regarding a coaching change, Borges remains at the helm for these immediate commitments.
The timing of a potential transition is linked to the international break that follows the Moreirense game. This two-week hiatus is viewed by the club as an ideal window to integrate a new technical staff, particularly as the first match after the break is a Taça de Portugal fixture against lower-league side União da Serra. Borges, who signed a contract extension in May 2024 lasting until 2028, has faced mounting pressure following a series of disappointing home results, including losses to LASK Linz and Académico de Viseu.
The Sporting squad is currently third in the Primeira Liga with 18 points, nine behind leaders FC Porto and four behind second-placed Benfica. In the Champions League, the team occupies sixth place with six points from six matches, tied with Barcelona, Club Brugge, and Borussia Dortmund. The club secured a 2-1 victory over Marítimo in the Taça da Liga and will face União da Serra in the Taça de Portugal quarterfinals in late November.
Securing Paulo Fonseca would require a formal agreement with Lyon, where the Portuguese manager is under contract until the end of the current season. L’Équipe reported that Sporting is prepared to match the salary Fonseca currently earns in France. Record noted that the manager’s high wages—reportedly 2.5 million euros net per season—present a significant financial challenge, though Fonseca reportedly views the Sporting project as a compelling challenge due to his childhood affinity for the club.
Whilst Rui Borges could soon be sacked, Sporting CP have already made contact with Lyon and their manager Paulo Fonseca, considered their primary target. The Rhône-based club’s debt to their counterparts could facilitate a potential deal – the details. (CNN)…
While Sporting is currently a creditor of Lyon—following the 6.4 million euro transaction involving Afonso Moreira—sources indicate that any potential coaching negotiations would be treated as an independent process. Should an agreement be reached, it would mark Fonseca’s return to Portuguese football nearly a decade after his departure in 2016. His coaching resume includes stints at FC Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, AS Roma, Lille, and AC Milan.
Sporting’s search for alternatives has not been limited to Fonseca. CNN Portugal reported that club officials have contacted several other high-profile names in recent weeks to assess their interest. The list of potential successors has included Vítor Pereira, who is currently without a club following his departure from Nottingham Forest, and Paulo Sousa, who has been linked to a return to Portugal after working in the Middle East. Other names such as Abel Ferreira and Leonardo Jardim have been mentioned, though their current contractual situations at clubs in Brazil make their recruitment significantly more difficult.
Vítor Pereira, a 38-year-old Portuguese coach who was part of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team, began the previous season at Marítimo before moving to Swansea in England’s second division. He is now linked to English club Crystal Palace and Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Rui Borges, meanwhile, has previously coached FC Porto, according to Record, during the 2013/14 season.
Rui Borges, 45, continues his preparation for the upcoming Champions League match in London against Shakhtar Donetsk. The club’s decision on his future remains dependent on the team’s performance in these final games before the international break.
