The Baltimore Ravens could face another significant challenge in Sunday's Week 8 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, with wide receiver D.J. Moore expected to return after missing Buffalo's past two games with a shoulder injury.
Moore is officially listed as questionable after practicing on a limited basis Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. According to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe, the veteran receiver expects to play against Baltimore unless he has a setback, although the Bills have not confirmed his availability.
The former Chicago Bears receiver has missed Buffalo's past two games after aggravating a shoulder injury that originally occurred earlier this season. Moore has 12 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown in four appearances, but his return could significantly impact Josh Allen's passing attack.
According to Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis, Allen has completed 66% of his passes traveling at least 10 yards downfield with Moore on the field, a rate that would rank second in the NFL. Without Moore over Buffalo's previous three games, that completion percentage dropped to 41%, ranking 26th.
Sharp's analysis highlights Moore's value beyond his individual receiving statistics. His ability to threaten defenses vertically creates opportunities for Allen to attack different areas of the field while preventing opposing secondaries from concentrating exclusively on other receivers.
Baltimore could be particularly vulnerable to that dimension of Buffalo's offense.
According to Sharp, the Ravens are allowing 10.2 yards per target to opposing No. 1 receivers, ranking 30th in the NFL. Sharp Football Analysis
Moore's potential return would give Buffalo another established target alongside Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer. For Baltimore, the challenge will be limiting explosive plays while maintaining disciplined coverage against Allen, whose ability to extend plays forces defensive backs to remain engaged beyond the initial route combinations. Cornerbacks Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey could see important assignments against Moore, while Kyle Hamilton's versatility could help Baltimore adjust its coverage depending on Buffalo's formations.
The Ravens enter Sunday at 4-3 after consecutive losses to Cleveland and Cincinnati, including a 35-13 defeat in which Baltimore allowed five consecutive second-half touchdown possessions. Buffalo is 5-1 and averaging an NFL-best 32.8 points per game, making another defensive breakdown particularly costly.
Moore's return would make it harder to contain Allen, but his status remains uncertain until Buffalo announces its game-day inactives.
The Bills and Ravens kick off at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at Highmark Stadium.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that D.J. Moore will be in the lineup on Sunday afternoon.
