Jose Mourinho has sent a message to Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has sent a message of support to Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who reportedly 'broke down' following the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel. Owono, 25, was sent off for a foul on De Miguel during a Spanish second division match.

De Miguel laid motionless on the pitch and received urgent medical attention before being taken to hospital. His condition deteriorated overnight, and Tenerife confirmed his death on Tuesday morning.

The club said in a statement: "Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.

"We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfenismo (natives of Tenerife) that today weeps for this cruel outcome. The family of Jeses de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments."

Spanish outlet AS reported that Owono was 'crying and praying' in the dressing room after the match was abandoned with the score at 2-2. The Equatorial Guinea-born goalkeeper was said to have been 'visibly shaken' throughout the journey back to Andorra.

Reports in Spain say Owono closed his social media accounts after receiving a flood of abusive messages. He had reportedly planned to apologise and offer his support to De Miguel and his family in private before making a public statement. De Miguel’s death changed those plans.

Mourinho described it as a 'very, very, very difficult moment' for the Andorra goalkeeper before adding: "I think it's something very shocking for the world in general, so imagine for the world of football, for people like us who are on the pitch competing every day."

Andorra paid tribute by saying: "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife."

The Spanish Football Federation announced that Tuesday's Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures had been postponed in honour of De Miguel.

"We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, as well as to Club Deportivo Tenerife and all its fans, whom we accompany in these moments of great sorrow," it said.

Spanish police confirmed they had opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following De Miguel’s death.

De Miguel made his professional debut for Leganes B in 2015 and played for several Spanish clubs before joining Tenerife from Castellon on a three-year deal in 2025. He scored 11 goals in 29 appearances to help Tenerife win promotion back to the Segunda Division.
