March Town manager Ash Taylor saluted his side’s collective effort after the Hares stretched their unbeaten league run to seven matches with a 2-0 victory at Mildenhall Town.
Goals from defenders Charlie Bowen and Cavan King secured another valuable three points for the Premier Division leaders, who moved six points clear at the top of the table.
Bowen broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time before King wrapped up the victory two minutes from the end, with Taylor particularly pleased to see his defenders making decisive contributions at both ends of the pitch.
“I think today’s game summed things up a little bit, especially with the weather starting to change,” said Taylor.
“My two centre-halves scored the goals, with Bones and Cavs both getting on the scoresheet.
“Overall, I thought it was a good, organised performance. We could certainly have scored more goals with the number of times we got into the final third.
“We just didn’t quite get the final pass or the decision-making right at times, but that can happen.
“When your attacking players aren’t quite firing on all cylinders, you need other players to step up, and that’s exactly what happened with Bones and Cavs.
“I’m delighted for both of them, pleased to get another three points and it was particularly nice to keep a clean sheet.”
Taylor was especially satisfied with his side’s defensive display after conceding in their previous outing against Kirkley.
He added: “We conceded against Kirkley and, as a manager, you always want to keep clean sheets.
“Today we defended how we needed to defend, put our bodies on the line and got things right in the critical moments.
“It was a good day for us.”
Although the goalscorers grabbed the headlines, Taylor reserved special praise for Flo Tsaguim, whose tireless running and work-rate caused Mildenhall problems throughout the afternoon.
“I thought it was a really good collective performance, but if I was going to single someone out, it would probably be Flo,” said the Hares boss.
“The amount of running he did, both in and out of possession, was outstanding.
“He’ll probably be a little frustrated because he didn’t score and didn’t quite get that final bit right, but first and foremost he worked incredibly hard for the team.
“Everyone put a shift in, but Flo was a standout for me.
“The problems he caused them with his running and sprinting were there for everyone to see. He was a thorn in their side all afternoon.”
March’s impressive run has come during a demanding period of Saturday and Tuesday fixtures, which has left little opportunity for training.
However, Taylor believes the busy schedule has actually helped him manage his squad and ensure players receive valuable game time.
“In a way, playing Saturday and Tuesday has been better for us,” he explained.
“It’s made it easier to manage the squad and give players minutes.
“We’re doing OK, but you don’t want to get carried away at this stage of the season.
“You just have to keep focusing on each week and understand how hard you have to work to win football matches.
“We had to work really hard today. Nothing came easily.
“It’s about continuing to do the right things and seeing where that takes us.”
The Hares now turn their attention to cup football with a trip to Soham Town Rangers in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup tomorrow night - a week after beating them 3-1 in the League Challenge Cup thanks to goals from Taylor Harvey, Louie Jenkins and Reuben Marshall.
March then return to Premier Division action on Saturday when they welcome Stowmarket Town to the GER Sports Ground.
March Town: Whitehall, Emmington, Brumby, Green, Bowen, King, Tsaguim, Jenkins, Marshall, Tait, Henson. Subs: Foy, Miller, Watkins, Harvey.
