As reported earlier in the week, Der Klassiker is getting a rather unusual makeover this weekend, with the Bundesliga introducing an alternate broadcast that takes viewers into an entirely different football universe.
For the first time ever, a Bundesliga match will be brought to life in a fully virtual world, with Bayern Munich’s showdown against Borussia Dortmund recreated in a Playmobil-inspired environment. The ambitious project makes the Bundesliga the first professional football league in the world to present a full live match on this scale within a virtual entertainment environment.
Below is a sneak peek of what it might look like.
Is that Alphonso Davies or Jules Winnfield?
Anyway, this is not simply a pre-rendered animation of the game. Using official real-time match data, every pass, sprint, tackle, and goal will be replicated as the action unfolds on the actual pitch. Players and the ball will appear as Playmobil-style characters, with their movements mirroring what is happening in the stadium.
Naturally, there will be plenty of additional entertainment thrown into the mix. Viewers can expect interactive features, mini-games, creative storytelling, and even a jet-pack camera to offer some rather unconventional perspectives of the action.
It is certainly a creative way to attract a different audience to the Bundesliga. Whether Playmobil Kane can outscore Playmobil Dortmund remains to be seen!
