According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur plan to sell Lucas Bergvall to FC Barcelona in the upcoming January transfer window on one condition.
Bergvall has had an interesting couple of months, with the midfielder heavily linked with a potential exit from Tottenham in this summer’s transfer window.
There were suggestions that Spurs were open to selling Bergvall in the summer because of the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes.
Tottenham were said to value Bergvall at around £60m, but he stayed because Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and others could not reach an agreement with the north London side.
Therefore, it was a surprise when it was announced in September that Bergvall had penned a new long-term contract until 2031.
Despite this, Bergvall has only made two Premier League starts this season and six appearances in all competitions, as he remains linked with a move away from Tottenham.
And our colleagues at TEAMtalk are reporting that Tottenham are ‘highly reluctant’ to sell Bergvall to one of his admirers, which includes Barcelona.
However, it is said that there is ‘one way’ for a January transfer to happen, with Tottenham needing to sign a replacement for Bergvall to move elsewhere.
The report explains:
‘Sources indicate Tottenham are reluctant to lose Bergvall in January without bringing in cover. Allowing him to leave would reduce depth in a key area, and the club are not prepared to weaken the squad mid-season without a replacement already lined up.
‘That stance makes a permanent transfer or temporary departure highly unlikely in the winter window, regardless of interest from abroad.’
Upon signing a new contract at Tottenham, Bergvall revealed why he decided to extend his stay at the club.
“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the Club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said.
“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.
“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”
