Young Kingston footballers achieve success three years after fire destroyed training ground
Kingston College's Men's Football Academy now supports 60 student footballers (Image supplied)

What could have been a devastating setback for Kingston College's Men's Football Academy has become a story of resilience, partnership and growth.

At the start of the 2023/24 season, the Academy faced an unprecedented series of challenges.

Long-standing Director Martyn Spong retired, several experienced coaches moved on, and a fire destroyed the clubhouse, storage facilities and training ground at Hampton Wick Cricket Club, which had been the Academy's home for many years.

Overnight, players and staff found themselves without equipment, kits, and a training facility just as a new academic year was beginning.

Rather than letting these setbacks define them, the Academy embarked on a complete rebuild. Over the past three seasons, the programme has been restructured from the ground up, transforming the way players are recruited, trained and developed.

Today, the Academy supports around 60 student footballers, all of whom combine their sporting ambitions with their studies at Kingston College.

The rebuild has already delivered impressive results. In recent years, two Academy players have signed for Bedfont Sports' first team, while others have progressed to play Isthmian League football at Under-18 level, Combined Counties Under-18 football and senior football at Step 5 and Step 6 clubs.

The Academy has established a clear pathway for talented young players looking to develop both academically and athletically.

Key to that success has been the support of local partners. Bedfont Sports has provided stability and opportunities for player progression, while Goals Tolworth stepped in following the fire, offering vital training facilities when they were needed most.

Those relationships have continued to flourish, with Academy players now training and playing on a modern 4G surface three times a week while competing in league fixtures at Bedfont Sports' stadium.

Academy staff believe the programme is now in its strongest position for years, with plans for further growth and continued investment in the student experience.
