A blockbuster IPL trade is taking shape ahead of the 2027 season, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya understood to be heading to the Punjab Kings from the Mumbai Indians, according to reports. Senior officials at both franchises have reached an agreement in principle, and paperwork is expected to be submitted to IPL authorities imminently.
Pandya's move would see Punjab Kings send left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod to Mumbai Indians as part of the exchange. Once PBKS and Mumbai Indians finalise the arrangement, a public announcement is anticipated before the November 17 retention deadline. The BCCI extended that cut-off from the original November 15 date after informing franchises on Monday of the revised timeline.
As reported by Sportstar, besides PBKS, at least two other franchises held discussions with the Mumbai-based franchise over a potential Hardik trade. Kolkata Knight Riders were the only side whose talks reached a comparable level of seriousness, though those negotiations ultimately did not progress as far. The identity of the third franchise involved in early-stage discussions has not been confirmed.
Pandya's three-season stint as captain at Mumbai Indians brought little reward, with the side finishing near the foot of the IPL standings twice during that period. The 2026 IPL season was particularly difficult: Mumbai Indians collected just four wins from 14 matches and ended the campaign ninth in the table. That record appears to have convinced the franchise that a significant rebuild is necessary before IPL 2027.
Pandya had joined Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 IPL season via an all-cash trade from Gujarat Titans. His earlier two-season spell at Gujarat Titans had been a high point in his franchise career, a period that included leading them to the IPL title in 2022, though that detail remains subject to editorial verification. The return to his home franchise, however, did not deliver the results either party had envisaged across three seasons in charge.
Arshdeep has long been central to Punjab Kings' plans. At the 2025 mega auction, the franchise initially released him before exercising their Right Match card to bring him back, matching Sunrisers Hyderabad's winning bid of Rs. 18 crore by paying Rs. 15.75 crore. His potential switch to Mumbai Indians would mark a notable shift in the balance of power between the two franchises heading into IPL Auction and Retention planning for 2027.
Separately, Lucknow Super Giants are reported to be considering an approach to Punjab Kings involving Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan. Any Stoinis and Mohsin arrangement remains at a very early stage, and no agreement between Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings has been confirmed. The immediate priority for both Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings is completing the Hardik, Arshdeep and Vishnu deal before the November 17 deadline.
