Chelsea could have another injury concern on their hands after Emi Martinez confirmed he intends to join up with Argentina for the upcoming international break.
The goalkeeper has been sidelined since suffering a concussion and fractured jaw during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton in October.
While Xabi Alonso recently hinted that Martinez could return before the break, the 34-year-old has now revealed that he is still struggling with the injury.
Despite that, he has no intention of missing Argentina's upcoming fixtures, and his comments will certainly give Chelsea reason to feel frustrated.
Speaking to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Martinez confirmed that he intends to travel for Argentina's two upcoming home friendlies against Uruguay on November 13 and Costa Rica on November 17.
“I'll be going,” the goalkeeper said when asked about his international plans.
“I've spoken to (Argentina goalkeeping coach) Martín (Tocalli) and (head coach Lionel) Scaloni, and my plan is to be part of the squad for the double-header to play in goal.
“I don't know if I'll be fit for the first or the second match; that will depend on how the training goes and whether I'm doing well during the week.”
Although Martinez has confirmed his intention to travel, he has not guaranteed that he will be fit enough to feature in either fixture.
The goalkeeper also revealed just how much his injury is still affecting him.
“At the moment, I can't eat anything solid – it's all puréed food; I'm like a baby,” he explained.
He added that he has been working with a nutritionist to maintain his condition, although he sometimes lacks strength during training.
That is hardly ideal preparation for a return to competitive action, particularly when he has yet to resume full training with Chelsea.
Alonso will understandably want Martinez back as soon as possible, but there is little reason for Chelsea to take unnecessary risks with his recovery.
Mike Penders has stepped in during his absence and has been given an opportunity to impress. His recent performances have been encouraging, with the young Belgian showing that he is capable of competing for a more regular role.
Chelsea have just one more fixture, against Sunderland, before the international break. That gives Martinez a little more time to make progress, although his recent comments suggest there is still work to do before he can return.
There is also the question of what happens if Argentina want him to feature. Martinez clearly has ambitions to represent his country, but Chelsea will be keen to ensure he does not aggravate an injury that has already kept him out for several weeks.
The international break will provide the goalkeeper with the chance to continue his recovery alongside Argentina's medical staff, but it's far from ideal, and certainly something Chelsea won't want.
