Unai Emery could have a significant influence on Michael Carrick’s future when Aston Villa visit Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Spaniard has emerged as United’s most admired managerial candidate, with Carrick facing mounting pressure following a disastrous start to the 2026/27 season.
Tuesday’s extraordinary 3-2 Champions League comeback against AS Roma may have bought Carrick valuable time, ending a nine-match winless streak.
However, United remain 17th in the Premier League, with INEOS expected to reassess his position during November’s international break.
Emery’s managerial credentials are considerable.
He transformed Almeria into a top-flight Spanish club, guided Valencia to three consecutive third-place finishes and led Villarreal to the 2022 Champions League semi-finals.
Since joining Villa in October 2022, Emery has secured Champions League qualification twice and ended the club’s 30-year wait for silverware by winning the 2026 Europa League.
His reputation has consequently attracted United’s attention.
On 30 October, Centre Devils reported that Emery topped United’s managerial wishlist, following comments from Fabrizio Romano.
However, Villa released an official statement on Wednesday, outlining their commitment to retaining the 55-year-old beyond 2029.
Now, further developments suggest his future is approaching a significant conclusion.
According to Guillem Balague on BBC Sport, Emery is close to agreeing a contract extension with Aston Villa.
Negotiations are ongoing regarding the financial terms, duration and additional responsibilities attached to the proposed agreement.
Unai Emery reportedly wants greater involvement in Villa’s long-term development, with chairman Nassef Sawiris determined to retain his services.
The club intend to announce the agreement once negotiations conclude, although an announcement is unlikely before Sunday’s clash against United.
Emery’s existing contract expires in June 2029, but the proposed extension would secure his future beyond that date.
Villa currently sit tenth in the Premier League, having won three of their opening four Champions League matches.
The development represents a significant blow to United’s hopes of appointing Emery should Carrick depart.
With the international break approaching, INEOS may have to reconsider their managerial alternatives.
