Manchester United have several calls to make ahead of the January transfer window, including the future of Bruno Fernandes, who could depart Old Trafford in 2027.

Fernandes, who helped inspire United to a sensational comeback win over Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, has a contract that runs until June 2027, but has the option to extend it by another year.

The Red Devils have previously held talks with the 32-year-old over extending his deal, though the chance of him leaving has become a real possibility in recent weeks.

Bruno Fernandes has three dream destinations if he leaves Man United

Fernandes stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons last month after calling out Michael Carrick's tactics following their 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.

He was then dropped from the starting lineup against Bournemouth and didn't feature at all as his side lost 3-0. Carrick insisted that the decision was purely tactical and had nothing to do with the comments he made.

The Man United boss and his captain held clear-the-air talks last week, where the midfielder outlined his full commitment to the club before returning to the starting XI in the defeat against Chelsea and scoring a penalty in the win over Roma.

United will hope that the sensational comeback inspires a resurgence in the Premier League, including consistent world-class performances from Fernandes, who will want his future resolved sooner rather than later.

Currently, the Portuguese playmaker is likely to have the automatic one-year extension in his contract triggered, but if he does eventually depart next summer to land them a sizeable fee, he already has three preferred destinations.

Speaking to Canal 11 in December 2025, he said: “I would like to experience the Spanish league and fight for big titles in Italy. I have many connections to Italy… my daughter was born there.

"I’ve already thought about returning to Portugal… the first option would be Sporting. To be happy, like it was with Sporting. But I don’t want to ruin the image that was left."

"But I don’t want to drag myself there, I want to add to it. And even try district football, at an advanced age. You play in the district for love, you feel different. I have friends in the district."

Fernandes played for three teams in Italy - Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria - during the early years of his career, before returning to Portugal with Sporting, where his top-quality performances landed him a move to United in January 2020.

Al-Hilal have ended Bruno Fernandes' pursuit

Fernandes is likely to remain in Europe once he leaves the 13-time Premier League champions, which could rule out the possibility of him moving to Saudi Arabia.

Al-Hilal were willing to pay £100million for the midfielder in 2025 and even offered to triple his wages, but United's captain ultimately decided that he wanted to continue competing at the highest level.

After being slammed for his public comments on Carrick, there were rumours of Saudi Pro League sides returning for Fernandes in January, though Al-Hilal won't be one of them.

According to talkSPORT, they have already allocated all of their slots for overseas players after a summer spending spree that included the signings of Premier League trio Gabriel Martinelli, Ollie Watkins and Crysencio Summerville.

Fernandes is likely to stay at Old Trafford until at least next summer, when the club will decide whether to cash in or hand him an extended contract.
