Alan Shearer has highlighted Liverpool's "problem" at left-back and stated that the departed Andy Robertson is "better" than their two current options in the position.

Having joined the Reds from Hull City in 2017, the Scotland captain exited Anfield after nine years in the summer to join Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham team on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old has featured regularly for the Lilywhites since making the move, starting seven of their nine Premier League games so far this season.

On the other hand, Liverpool have rotated between Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Andoni Iraola's team were on the losing side in the Champions League on Wednesday evening following a 3-2 defeat away at Fenerbahce, with Tsimikas struggling up against Mason Greenwood all game prior to Kerkez coming on his place.

Amid Liverpool's current struggles at left-back, Shearer gave his verdict on Iraola's current predicament and mentioned that the Reds let go of their best left-back during the summer.

"They've got a problem at left-back," said the Newcastle United legend when speaking on The Rest is Football podcast. "I mean, they let Robertson go when they've got Kerkez and Tsimikas.

I think Robertson is better than both of those two. I think there's problems, and it'll take a bit of time to sort it out.

Iraola's Kerkez task

It is not the first time Kerkez has come in for criticism from Shearer after the former England international spoke about his concerns back in September 2025.

Struggling in his opening couple of months as a Liverpool player after faring so well for Bournemouth under Iraola, Shearer mentioned that the Reds were "not seeing the same player" in Kerkez after his outstanding performances down the left flank for the Cherries.

“Well, at the minute we’re not seeing the same player in Kerkez, particularly the left-hand side as we saw with Bournemouth," he said on NBC Sports.

“He was free-flowing. He had the license to go and roam and get forward. Here, to me it seems as if he’s caught in two minds whether he’s going to go, whether he’s going to stay and help protect that with Van Dijk and Konate.”

Kerkez has improved since his first few months at Liverpool but he's still not producing the levels he was on a regular basis during his time at Bournemouth.

Iraola is clearly the perfect man to get the best out of the Hungarian after doing so before, but he clearly has a huge challenge on his hands when it comes to Liverpool's issues at left-back.

If the Merseyside club continue to struggle there then the club may have no option but to upgrade in the position either in the January transfer window or next summer.
